  1. Understand the credential

    Before choosing study material, be clear about what the badge claims. Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Fundamentals is a beginner credential for Microsoft Power Platform and the App Maker role. It validates an understanding of the platform's business value and product capabilities, not deep engineering skill.

    The exam is intended for people starting their journey building Power Platform solutions. That framing explains the style of the questions: most of them ask you to recognize a capability and match it to a business outcome, rather than to build something.

  2. Understand the credential

    The candidate journey centers on tailored business solutions, Dataverse and connectors, AI-powered Power Apps solutions, Power Automate processes, and Copilot Studio agents. Read that sentence as the map of the exam: five themes, each with a product surface behind it.

    Position matters as much as content. PL-900 can help prepare a learner for role-based certifications, but it is not a prerequisite for them. Nobody is blocked from a role-based exam for skipping PL-900, and passing it does not exempt anyone from one either. It is a runway, not a gate.

  5. Know the assessed domains

    The four product and management domains share the largest weighting band, while business value has the smallest band. So the bulk of the exam is about the products and the environment; business value is the smallest slice, not the headline.

    Two details shape what can appear inside those domains. The objectives beneath each domain illustrate how Microsoft assesses that skill, and related topics may also appear. Most questions cover generally available features, although commonly used Preview features can appear. Preparing only for the literal bullet list is therefore a little risky.

    Candidates have 45 minutes to complete the PL-900 assessment. Most Microsoft Certification exams typically contain between 40 and 60 questions, but the number can vary as exams change. Treat that range as orientation rather than a guaranteed PL-900 question count — its practical use is the pace it implies, which is well under a minute per question if the count lands at the top of the range.

  10. Separate exam duration from seat duration

    A common surprise is seeing two different times quoted for the same exam. They measure different things. Fundamentals exams have a 65-minute seat duration. Exam duration is the time available to complete the questions, while seat duration also includes instructions, the candidate agreement, and optional comments.

    Two rules catch candidates who assume a Fundamentals exam is relaxed about them.

    Microsoft Learn access is not available during Fundamentals exams. Anything you were planning to look up has to be in your head instead.

    Unscheduled breaks are permitted, but the clock continues, and after a break starts a candidate cannot return to questions already viewed. A break therefore costs time twice: the minutes it consumes, and the questions it closes behind you.

English and localized deliveries can therefore be measuring slightly different scopes at the same moment, with the English outline on the leading edge. Confirm the skills version that applies on the planned exam date, especially when booking in another language shortly after an update.
