  1. The credential and the role

    Knowing what the exam is for changes how you study. It tells you which scenarios are fair game and which are somebody else's job.

    DP-750 leads to the Microsoft Certified: Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate credential, an intermediate certification for the Data Engineer role. Intermediate is the level between fundamentals and expert: it assumes you have worked with the platform rather than only read about it.

  3. What the role actually does

    Candidates are expected to integrate and model data, build and deploy optimized pipelines, and troubleshoot and maintain Azure Databricks workloads. They should also have experience with data quality and data governance best practices in Unity Catalog.

    Read "troubleshoot and maintain" carefully. A pipeline that once worked is squarely inside the role: diagnosing a failed run, tuning a slow one, and keeping the whole thing healthy count as much as building it in the first place.

    They collaborate with administrators, platform and solution architects, data scientists, and data analysts to design, deploy, and secure data engineering solutions. The role is not solitary, which is why governance and security appear so prominently: your output is somebody else's input.

  4. The skills you are assumed to bring

    The role is broader than writing transformations. Candidates need SQL and Python for ingestion and transformation, software development lifecycle practices including Git, and familiarity with Microsoft Entra, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Monitor.

    The exam assesses four domains: setting up and configuring Azure Databricks, securing and governing Unity Catalog objects, preparing and processing data, and deploying and maintaining data pipelines and workloads.

    The first two domains establish the environment and its governance; the latter two cover the data journey and production operation. That pairing is a useful way to hold them in memory: build the place, control the place, then move data through it and keep it running.

    Treat the ranges as relative emphasis rather than exclusions. A domain with a 15 to 20 percent range remains assessed even though each 30 to 35 percent domain carries more weight.

    That has a direct consequence for planning. With limited review time and equal gaps everywhere, weight the heavier domains more — but keep reviewing setup and governance, because a fifth of the exam still comes from them. Two failure modes are common and both are avoidable:

    • Spending everything on the first domains because they appear first in the outline.
    • Dropping two domains entirely to go deep on two, and losing the marks they would have carried.
