  1. The role the exam assesses

Knowing what an exam is measuring changes how you study for it. The SAA-C03 exam is intended for individuals who perform a solutions architect role, and it is focused on the design of cost and performance optimized solutions.

The exam validates the ability to design solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework. That is the center of gravity: not the definition of a service in isolation, but whether a whole design is a sound one.

  2. The role the exam assesses

Candidates are evaluated on designing for current and projected needs and improving existing solutions. Three kinds of work sit behind that sentence:

The task What a question looks like
Design for today's requirements Business and technical constraints are stated; choose the architecture that meets them
Design for the growth that is expected The requirements include what is coming, not only what exists
Review an existing solution and improve it A design is presented, and something about it must get better

Expect scenarios that ask which architecture best satisfies several business and technical constraints at once — that combination is the exam's habitual shape.

    2 / 23
  3. Quick check

Which role is the SAA-C03 exam built to assess?

    1. AA database operator who works only on database engines

Database work appears inside the scenarios, but the exam is not scoped to a single engine or operator role.

    2. BA solutions architect

Right. The exam is intended for individuals who perform a solutions architect role.

    3. CA procurement specialist responsible for buying IT equipment

Purchasing is not what the exam assesses; the subject is the design of solutions.

    3 / 23

  4. What it does not ask of you

This is an ideal starting point for candidates with AWS Cloud experience or strong on-premises IT experience, and it is deliberately not a developer exam. Deep hands-on coding experience is not required, although basic programming familiarity can help.

That balance is worth taking seriously in both directions. Nobody will ask you to write a working program under time pressure — but the reasoning is technical throughout, and comfort with basic programming concepts is an advantage when a scenario describes how an application behaves.

    4 / 23
  5. Quick check

A candidate is worried about being asked to write production code under time pressure. What does the exam actually expect?

    1. ADeep hands-on coding, because the questions are programming exercises

The exam explicitly does not require deep hands-on coding experience.

    2. BNo technical depth at all, because the exam is a commercial one

The reasoning is thoroughly technical; only the coding depth is what is not required.

    3. CNo deep coding, although familiarity with basic programming concepts is an advantage

Right. Deep hands-on coding experience is not required, though basic programming familiarity would be an advantage.

    5 / 23

  6. Four domains, and what they weigh

The exam has four content domains, and each carries a specific weighting, so some sections contain more questions than others.

Content domain Share of scored content
    Design Secure Architectures 30 percent
    Design Resilient Architectures 26 percent
    Design High-Performing Architectures 24 percent
    Design Cost-Optimized Architectures 20 percent
    6 / 23
  7. Four domains, and what they weigh

Read the table twice, because it says two different things.

First, an order: Design Secure Architectures accounts for 30 percent of scored content, ahead of Design Resilient Architectures, which accounts for 26 percent. Then Design High-Performing Architectures with 24 percent, and Design Cost-Optimized Architectures with 20 percent.

Second, a shape: the four weights are close together. No domain can be skipped on the grounds of being small, and the heaviest one is not heavy enough to carry a candidate who ignores the rest. The weights are the four quality dimensions of the same designs, appearing in different proportions.

    7 / 23
  8. Quick check

Which content domain carries the largest share of the scored content?

    1. ADesign Secure Architectures, at 30 percent

Right. Design Secure Architectures is the heaviest domain at 30 percent of scored content.

    2. BDesign Resilient Architectures, at 20 percent

Resilient Architectures accounts for 26 percent, and 20 percent is the Cost-Optimized weighting.

    3. CDesign High-Performing Architectures, at 30 percent

High-Performing Architectures accounts for 24 percent, which places it third rather than first.

    8 / 23

  9. Keep your progress in the app

That’s 3 of 9 quick checks. In the app they stay answered, and every lesson remembers where you left off.

  10. Why the weights change how you answer

The domains are not four separate subjects taking turns. They are four questions asked about the same architecture, which is why a single scenario can name a security requirement, an availability requirement, and a budget in the same paragraph.

A viable answer may use AWS services correctly and still be the wrong answer, because another option meets more of the stated quality constraints. Before choosing, list what the question actually demanded — security, resilience, performance, cost — and check the candidate answer against all of it, not against the first constraint you read.

    9 / 23
  11. Quick check

Two answers both use AWS services in a supported way. How does the exam separate them?

    1. ABy which one satisfies more of the constraints the question stated

Right. A technically viable answer can still lose because another option meets more of the stated quality constraints.

    2. BBy which one happens to name the larger number of different AWS services

Counting services measures nothing at all; a bigger design is not a better one.

    3. CBy which one belongs to the most heavily weighted domain

Weights describe how much scored content a domain contributes, not which answer wins inside one question.

    10 / 23

  12. Length and question formats

The exam has 65 questions and a duration of 130 minutes. That is almost exactly two minutes per question, which is enough for a careful read and no more.

Questions use multiple-choice or multiple-response formats:

    Format Shape
Multiple choice One correct response and three incorrect ones
Multiple response Two or more correct responses among five or more options
    11 / 23
  13. Length and question formats

The practical consequence is a habit: check how many responses the item asks for before selecting anything. Multiple response items say how many to choose, and a partially selected answer is not a partially correct one.

The incorrect options are written to be plausible. They are the answers that a candidate with incomplete knowledge or skill might pick, and they match the content area of the question — so an option that "sounds like AWS" is not thereby right. Judge each option against the constraints the scenario stated.

    12 / 23
  14. Quick check

Which pair of response formats does SAA-C03 use?

    1. AEssays, followed by a live coding exercise

The exam contains no written essays and no coding exercise.

    2. BAn oral defense together with a hands-on laboratory

There is no oral or laboratory component in this exam.

    3. CMultiple choice and multiple response

Right. Questions use multiple-choice or multiple-response formats.

    13 / 23

  15. Scored and unscored items

Not every question counts, and you cannot tell which is which. Fifty questions affect the score and 15 unscored questions are not identified. The unscored items are there so that AWS can evaluate them for future use, and information about performance on them is collected for that purpose.

Fifty plus fifteen is the 65 you sit. Since nothing marks them apart, the only workable policy is to treat every item as scored.

    14 / 23
  16. Scored and unscored items

The second mechanical rule follows from the first. Unanswered questions are incorrect, and there is no penalty for guessing.

    Situation Sound action
You know the answer Answer it
You have narrowed it down but are unsure Answer with the best-supported option
You have no idea and time is short Answer anyway — a blank is scored as incorrect

There is never a reason to leave an item empty. A guess can only be worth zero, exactly like the blank, and it may be worth more.

    15 / 23
  17. Quick check

A candidate reaches the final item with little time left and is unsure of the answer. Nothing marks the item as scored or unscored. What is the sound action?

    1. ALeave it blank, since unanswered items earn partial credit

Unanswered questions are scored as incorrect, so a blank earns nothing at all.

    2. BAnswer with the best-supported option, since guessing has no penalty

Right. Unscored items are not identified, blanks count as incorrect, and there is no penalty for guessing.

    3. CSkip it, since the last questions of the exam are the unscored ones

The 15 unscored questions are not identified, so their position cannot be inferred.

    16 / 23

  18. How the result is reported

The exam has a pass or fail designation, and it is scored against a minimum standard set by AWS professionals following certification industry practice.

Scores range from 100 to 1,000, and the minimum passing score is 720. The score is scaled, which is what allows results to be compared across exam forms that may differ slightly in difficulty. What it reports is how you performed on the exam as a whole, and whether you passed.

    17 / 23
  19. How the result is reported

The compensatory scoring model requires passing the exam overall rather than every section. Strength in one domain can therefore make up for relative weakness in another: there is no per-section pass mark to clear.

A score report may also contain a table classifying performance at section level. It is general information that highlights strengths and weaknesses, and it should be interpreted with caution — the sections differ in weighting, so they contain different numbers of questions.

    18 / 23
  20. Quick check

A candidate scores above 720 overall but performed noticeably worse in one section. What does the scoring model imply?

    1. AEvery section has to reach 720 on its own as well

No per-section pass mark exists; the 720 applies to the scaled score for the whole exam.

    2. BThe weakest section alone decides the final outcome for the candidate

Section-level feedback highlights strengths and weaknesses, and should be read with caution rather than as a verdict.

    3. CThe overall exam has been passed; sections need no separate pass

Right. The compensatory model means only the overall exam has to be passed, not each individual section.

    19 / 23

  21. Preparing, and sitting it

The recommended preparation includes at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions with AWS services. Candidates with one to three years of general IT experience have also used this certification as a starting point, and someone with no IT work experience would do better to build foundational knowledge first.

Testing is available at a Pearson VUE testing center or as an online proctored exam. Practical work is what turns service facts into architecture judgment, so use labs and practice questions to rehearse choosing between designs — scenario judgment is the center of this role, and of its exam.

    20 / 23
  22. Quick check

A learner can recall service names but stalls when security, performance, and cost constraints appear together. Which preparation matches the exam?

    1. APractice choosing and improving architectures against combined constraints

Right. The exam validates designing solutions for current and projected needs and improving existing ones across the quality dimensions.

    2. BMemorize the alphabetical list of AWS service names

Recall of names is exactly the skill that is already present and is not what the scenarios reward.

    3. CStudy one domain only, since the sections are passed separately

Sections are not passed separately under a compensatory model, and every domain contributes scored content.

    21 / 23

  23. Key takeaways

    • SAA-C03 evaluates solution design across security, resilience, performance, and cost optimization, weighted at 30, 26, 24, and 20 percent of scored content.
    • The exam has 65 questions in 130 minutes using multiple-choice and multiple-response formats, and it does not require deep hands-on coding experience.
    • Fifty questions are scored, while 15 unscored questions are not identified; unanswered items count as incorrect and guessing carries no penalty.
    • A scaled score of 720 is the minimum passing score, and only the overall exam must be passed — scores run from 100 to 1,000 and no section has its own pass mark.
    • At least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions with AWS services is recommended, and the exam can be taken at a Pearson VUE testing center or online with a proctor.
    22 / 23
  24. Quick check

Which summary states the exam mechanics correctly?

    1. A65 questions in 65 minutes, all of them scored, with 1,000 as the passing score

The duration is 130 minutes, only 50 questions are scored, and 720 is the minimum passing score.

    2. B65 questions in 130 minutes, of which 50 are scored, and 720 as the passing score

Right. There are 65 questions in 130 minutes, 50 of them scored, and the minimum passing score is 720.

    3. C50 questions in 130 minutes, with the 15 unscored ones identified, and no minimum score

Sixty-five questions are presented, the 15 unscored ones are not identified, and 720 must be reached.
